Where the River Leads You Home.
Nestled along the banks of the Ohio River, St. Marys is a place where history, hospitality, and hometown pride come together. As the county seat of Pleasants County, our city has welcomed generations of families, businesses, and visitors, each adding a chapter to the story of the community we call home.
Founded in 1849 by Alexander Creel, St. Marys has a history as rich as the river that runs alongside it. According to local legend, Creel was inspired to establish the city after experiencing a vision of the Virgin Mary while traveling along the Ohio River. More than 175 years later, that same river remains central to our community’s identity.
Today, St. Marys continues to honor its heritage while looking toward the future. From our scenic riverfront and cherished community traditions to our growing recreational opportunities and local businesses, we’re proud of where we’ve been and excited about where we’re going.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time, returning to familiar streets, or have called St. Marys home for generations, we’re glad you’re here.
Welcome to St. Marys, where the river leads you home.
